At 1 a.m., neighbors in the area of Routt Count Road 14A could see flames on a hillside and smell smoke in the area, according to a news release.

While driving to the scene on Colorado Highway 131, firefighters could see flames, and they asked Oak Creek Fire Protection District firefighters to help with a 2,500-gallon water tender.

When firefighters arrived, the cabin was fully involved, and the roof had already collapsed.

Firefighters first focused on ensuring the fire did not spread and turn into a wildfire. Then, 8,000 gallons of water and foam were used to put out the cabin fire.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by Steamboat Fire Rescue and the Routt County Sheriff’s Office.
