Fire burning west of Maybell

Craig Daily Press Staff Report

Air reconnaissance estimated a wildfire 20 miles west of Maybell to be about 3,000 acres, the Northwest Colorado Fire Management Unit reported Tuesday morning.

The Allred Fire began about 4 p.m. Monday.

Firefighters listed the cause as lightning. The acreage involved in the fire is private land and Bureau of Land Management ground.

“The Allred Fire was growing so quickly (Monday) afternoon and evening that ground crews had difficulty assessing the size,” the FMU reported. “: Crews will fight the fire aggressively again today. There is one helicopter this morning and aerial needs will be assessed as the day progresses.”

Agencies and departments involved in fighting the fire are Moffat County Road and Bridge, Moffat County Sheriff’s Office, Maybell Volunteer Fire Department, BLM, National Park Service and the Fish and Wildlife Service.

Assigned to the fire today are three type-1 crews, one type-2 crew, four engines, one water truck, one helicopter and five smoke jumpers. About 100 fire personnel total are working the incident.

Fuel/vegetation burning is Ponderosa Pine, pinon and juniper trees.

No structures were being threatened as of Tuesday morning.

There is no containment estimate, the FMU reported.
