Fire board receives drawings of aerial truck

Dan Olsen

— The board of directors of the Craig Rural Fire Protection District was given an update on the department’s new aerial truck during Thursday’s meeting.

The $926,000 Rosenbauer T-Rex ladder truck was approved by the board in May, and completion and delivery is expected in August 2008.

The truck is under construction, and computer drawings of the aerial platform truck are on display at the fire station.

No decision has been made on the truck being replaced.

The board has received one offer for the truck, and options of passing the truck on to another county fire department are being considered.

In other action, it was noted that July has been the busiest month in the history of Craig Fire/Rescue, with department personnel responding to 40 calls in the month so far, with a week still remaining before August arrives.

Dozens of lightning strikes, combined with auto-accidents and structure fires, have kept firefighters busy, board chair Byron Willems said, with volunteers being called away from their jobs a record number of times.

In other action, the fire board approved the purchase of a new compressor to fill firefighter air-tanks after the department’s compressor developed problems.

The cost of the compressor and electrical work to install the piece of machinery is about $60,000, Willems said.

Craig Fire and Safety also was approved to receive a payment of $1,400 for firefighting foam used on the county’s numerous fires.

The next fire board meeting is 7 p.m. Aug. 16 at the Craig fire station.
