Fantasy Sports Fix: Deep sleepers for daily baseball

Chris Gingrich/For the Daily Press

Just to let you know, I’m really liking this Daily Fantasy sports stuff. Last week, I thought I had some good picks for you, but a couple of the guys ended up being injured and going day to day. I can’t let that slide, so this week, barring any injuries, these picks should be super solid.

I’m going deep this week with my picks. These guys are probably not on many radars just yet, but I’ve spotted them on the low end of the price range performing just as well as some top tier names. I’m even going to find a couple pitchers for you that aren’t outrageously priced.

You know, there’s a ton of ways to spend 200 virtual dollars in daily fantasy baseball. You can go with a few big name stars and then fill the rest of your team with scrubs, the stars and scrubs strategy. You can balance your team out so everyone’s price falls in the same range. Or, you can just tinker a bit and see what kind of production you get out of just deep sleepers or lesser known players.

Let’s start spending those virtual bucks with several bats to add to your lineup.

Brandon Guyer, outfield, Tampa Bay Rays

He should play very well when he goes up against any and all lefties as he hits them very well. Along with his increased playing time comes more production, but with that also might come a slightly lower batting average.

Danny Valencia, third base, Oakland Athletics

He scored 30 fantasy points over the weekend against Tampa Bay. The A’s begin a seven-game homestand this week against the Yankees and the Rangers. Use him now while he’s hot and you could reap the rewards.

Jonathan Schoop, second base, Baltimore Orioles

He has 10 RBIs in his last 4 games at the time of this writing. He goes into this week riding a hot streak so grab him while he’s still cheap.

Carlos Beltran, outfield, New York Yankees

He continues to be somewhat productive despite being lost in the shuffle in terms of who to pick up in the outfield.

Now, let’s take a look at a few pitchers worth starting this week.

Jon Gray, starting pitcher, Colorado Rockies

Pitching great over the last two weeks with 24 strikeouts in his 20 innings pitched. He even pitches well at Coors Field, which is a major plus.

Tyler Duffey, starting pitcher, Minnesota Twins

He just scored 25 points in seven innings pitched against Cleveland this last Sunday. He lowered his ERA to 1.85 in that game while striking out six in the winning effort. I expect a solid outing from him this Friday against the depleted Blue Jays lineup.

Matt Andriese, relief pitcher/starting pitcher, Tampa Bay Rays

He has 55 fantasy points in his last two outings. In those two outings in which he won as well, he also has eight strikeouts and only three walks.
