Fantasy Fix: Keep an eye on the waiver wire

Chris Gingrich

This week, I’d like to go over some waiver wire pickups in fantasy baseball and talk about some fantasy football.

As I sit and write Fantasy Fix this week, I’m also patiently waiting for the Major League Baseball Home Run Derby to provide me with some quality entertainment. My money is on Albert Pujols to win it, since he will be performing at home with all the support the St. Louis fans.

Since a lot of fantasy players will not be checking their lineups again until Thursday, now would be a good time to snag some help off of the waiver wire. Let’s start with a couple pitchers.

• Joel Pineiro, St. Louis Cardinals – He’s been producing a lot of quality starts this year and some are taking notice. In the past month, he’s compiled just 2 wins and 13 strikeouts, but his ERA of 1.63 is pretty nifty.

• Chad Gaudin, San Diego Padres – In his last 32.2 innings of work, he has struck out 39 batters and posted a very respectable 3.31 ERA. He is only owned in 5 percent of leagues right now, so you should be able to find him.

Now, here are two batters who have been heating up and should be owned in all formats.

• Gordan Beckham, third base/shortstop, Chicago White Sox – He won’t give you a lot of power, but he makes up for it by scoring and knocking in runs while keeping a good batting average.

• Scott Rolen, third base, Toronto Blue Jays – He has found his swing once again, and is hitting .337 for the last month or so to go along with decent RBI numbers. He’s probably the best free agent third baseman available in 45 percent of leagues right now.

On to football

National Football League training camps will open up at the end of the month, but the season is still close to two months away. I think it would be a good time to discuss a little fantasy football to help you prepare for an upcoming draft.

You’ve got to consider Tom Brady one of the bargains this year. Coming off of a devastating knee injury last year, most fantasy players are a little wary to spend a high pick on him.

I say you hold out on a quarterback and get Brady at a discounted price in later rounds. Remember, he has 3 wideouts ranked within the top 60 of the wide receiver corps this year. He could be a great steal.

I’m never really big on rookies until I see some production, but I think Knowshon Moreno, of the Denver Broncos, could be a great late-round selection. Even though he will have to fight for playing time, once he gets it, he could do some big things for fantasy owners who take a chance on him.
