Faith Column: Give thanks for our community

Pat Jones/For the Craig Daily Press

We live in a great community, don’t you agree? Sure we have our problems, but we work together to try to resolve them. I was just at a meeting of the Craig Human Resource Council. For those of you who are not involved with this group, it is made up of dedicated men and women who are the leaders and volunteers of local nonprofits. After the meeting, I thought about how each one reaches out to the community to help make it a better home for our neighbors living here. Some groups focus on education, some focus on directly helping with physical needs such as transportation, pets, medical help, therapy, etc., while others provide financial aid to help our needy neighbors through rough patches in their lives. Some groups focus on children and youth while others help individual adults or whole families. These agencies are staffed by committed men and women who work hard (and judging by some of the tired faces, they’re giving their personal time, too) to reach our neighbors with the services needed to raise quality of life. I also thought about the agencies who couldn’t attend and how many more services they represent; groups such as Salvation Army, law enforcement, Interfaith Food Bank, one of the newest, a soon-to-open women’s shelter called L.O.V.E. Ministries, and others. They also are working tirelessly to make our community a great place to live.

Of course, all this pondering brought me to thoughts of Love INC and the role we play in the community. What does Love INC of the Yampa Valley provide that is so different? We help with housing, food, financial aid, etc., we help children and adults and families, and we help with educational pieces … what is our unique part in our community? The answer is found in our name — Love In the Name of Christ. Love INC brings the churches and resources of Christ into the mix. Love INC is a strategy to help churches come together across denominational lines to be mobilized to help meet the multifaceted needs seen in our needy neighbor’s lives. Love In the Name of Christ is a proven outreach model. It is one of the most effective management, mobilization and networking tools available to churches today. Love INC is a method for mobilizing local church congregations to live out the two great commandments of loving God and loving their neighbor through collaboration with their community (agencies, government, schools) to provide effective help. Love INC is the church in action working in love just as we are commanded to do in I John 3, “Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth” (I John 3:18 NIV). Love INC serves a role that other nonprofits do not have.

This community is a great place to live. Let’s all enjoy spring in the Yampa Valley this week. Working together, we can reach out and help the neighbors around us enjoy it, too.
