Fairy tale love: Newlyweds choose to settle in Craig after a whirlwind romance
February 12, 2019
It was a chance meeting in downtown Orlando that brought Florida natives Alexa and Dean Taylor together in fall 2015. They've been nearly inseparable ever since.
"He fell in love at first sight," Alexa said. "I was a little more skeptical."
Dean didn't let that deter him.
"I told her from the very beginning I would marry her, and she didn't believe me," he recalled with a laugh.
At the time, both worked at Disney World, where he wooed her. It was during a Disney Christmas fireworks show that Alexa realized she had fallen for Dean.
"He allowed a little girl to sit in front of us to get a better view. I saw how kind and selfless he was, and I knew he had a good heart," she said. "He asked me to marry him, in front of the castle; it was like a princess fairy tale."
The young couple learned they have the same values: a strong work ethic, a love of traveling, a preference for staying home, and saving instead of partying.
"We went on two cruises, a road trip to the Grand Canyon and New York and realized how much we clicked," Alexa said.
Alexa and Dean were married Nov. 11 in Florida and celebrated three months of marriage Monday.
Having worked hard to pay for everything themselves, but unable to get enough time off, they quit work prior to their wedding.
"We had a two-week honeymoon, and three days after getting home, we moved cross country from Florida to Colorado. We're starting out in Craig," Alexa said.
They had nothing holding them back from their next adventure.
"We did not love Florida. We had traveled everywhere and decided where we wanted to end up," Alexa said. "We love the mountains and hiking — things that don't cost a ton of money."
They found a house with reasonable rent and, a few days after returning from their honeymoon, drove 30 hours to Craig. They made a second road trip to bring their pets and basic belongings, driving more than 6,000 miles in 10 days.
"It was what we wanted to do, so we made it happen," Alexa said.
They went to work soon after their move and recently finished a course to become certified nursing assistants. Both work the same shift at Sandrock Ridge Care and Rehabilitation.
"Our goal is that we want to work together. We know our work ethic, and we have each other's backs," Alexa said. "We are so thankful for Colorado. Everyone asks us, ‘Why Craig? Why go from Disney to Craig?’ Craig was super affordable, close to mountains, close to Steamboat. It's a great community.”
They were driving a small car with "Florida tires" when they got stuck in the snow and asked for help. It was offered, Alexa said.
"People here are opening hearts and homes to us. We would also ask why Orlando, when Craig feels more home than Orlando ever did," Dean said.
As they look to the future, Alexa said, "We really love working with and helping people and making a difference. We really are open to opportunities and not too set in stone."
She, along with their dog Tanner Taylor, want to "hike up a mountain." Dean also wants to go boating. They both look forward to seeing the leaves change color.
One thing is certain as they chart the adventures before them: "From the beginning, I just knew: I was a mosquito to the fire. I promised her 'I am going to treat you better than anyone else,'” Dean said. "I'm not letting her go. This is it."
