Economic Development office seeks business survey responses

Paul Shockley

Survey, anyone?

A month into a business survey distributed by the Craig-Moffat County Economic Development Partnership, the group’s executive director has scaled back the targeted number of responses he would consider to be representative

of area businesses.

Roughly 50 have been distributed so far; 40 to 50 percent of which were returned, Wallace Ralston said Thursday.

“We were hoping to get 100 surveys done,” he said. “I don’t want to nudge them too hard.”

Still, Ralston said he feels 50 completed “employment and retention surveys” should provide a good enough business sampling to start drawing conclusions by December.

The survey, intended to cover a cross-section of businesses, is designed to assess owners’ specific needs, from staffing, expansion wishes, or identify red tape getting in the way of business.

Based on the survey’s conclusions, Ralston said his non-profit partnership would recruit specific businesses; particularly new outfits that would complement existing local operations.

The partnership would help existing businesses expand their operations, Ralston has said.

Ralston has also said “big-box” retail operations and restaurants do not rank high on his recruitment list.
