Duane Koukol’s Poet’s Corner: ‘I Saw’

I saw third string
That could be first string
On any team
In the NFL
I saw Booker and Crick
Flow on the page
Of a new season
Like rivers that could not be stopped
I saw first string
Look like first string
Throw to open receivers
Open in the end zone, sing
But I saw
Right before half-time
A pass on the line
Full bore, on the run!
I saw fouls
That need to be cleaned up
Before the regular season
Kicker as good as yesterday
I saw one hundred-thirty yards total offense
Seven sacks
And were not going to Rush?
Bears reduced to Cubs!
I saw the Fox Hunt
Turn into a slaughter
The hunters every bit as good
As last year’s courses they rode
Yes, I saw
Four starting horses
Tired from dancing
With the stars
Never even leave
The gate
One with fresh
Head burns, what’s that about?
I saw no smiles
On Denver’s past
Faced the winds of December
Coming off a frozen lake
I saw words
I said
Something about
“A rebuilding year?”
I meant!
