Duane Koukol: A poem called ‘Crying Hearts’

To the editor:

I asked about her tattoo.

She showed it to me.

A heart, once was red.

Now re-colored black.

She said; “I lost him!

Funny you should ask.

Because it was his birthday, today.”

I said; ‘I’m sorry.’

And slowly walked away.

Some other man’s war!

So many years, but just yesterday!

Now in far off desert lands.

Or high up, in the mountains.

A cold snowy ridge.

Another heart, crying.

On the inside.

A love one’s arm.

Tattooed forever.

His name.
