Dry week to follow Monday rains in Craig

Although the Northwest Colorado region saw a small amount of moisture earlier this week, there’s no need to break out the raincoats just yet.

Craig and the surrounding area received between 0.3 to 1 inch of precipitation during stormy weather throughout the late afternoon and evening Monday. The majority of rain came about 20 miles west of town, according to the National Weather Service.

This is about as much precipitation as the area can expect for the near future. The likelihood of thunderstorms and rainfall is expected to diminish more and more as the week progresses, with daily high temperatures ranging from mid-70s earlier in the week to mid-80s by Sunday.

Dennis Phillips, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, said the activity is fairly typical for the area this time of year.

“It seems like we’re in that typical mid-summer pattern of surges of monsoon moisture and thunderstorms, then the moisture gets pushed away, so it’ll be the ebb and flow of that,” he said.

Phillips added that Craig likely will see some rainfall in mid-August but not a great deal.

“As soon as fall gets here, we get some bigger pushes of cold air so that’s when we see some bigger changes,” he said.
