Now that she’s been a part of the Craig community for more than a month, the newest staff member of Kinder Family Clinic has plenty of positive things to say about the people here.

Physician Shannon Becker first began at Kinder Family Clinic in late September. As the medical outlet’s family practitioner, she is on hand five days a week to attend to the needs of patients, whom she said have already been receptive to her presence.

“Everybody’s really welcomed me with open arms,” she said. “Patients are really grateful for the care they receive and that makes it easier to provide care here.”

Colleague Dr. Pamela Kinder said Becker’s familiarity with the area has helped her make a good first impression.

“She really relates to them, she communicates and interacts with them well, and she understands where they’re coming from with her background,” Kinder said.

Becker is a Colorado native, born and raised in Steamboat Springs, having spent a good amount of time in rural Routt County at her family’s ranch in Toponas. She received her undergraduate and medical education through University of Colorado and also worked at Denver’s St. Anthony North Family Medicine Residency program.

The family part of her title is an important one, Becker said.

“One of the reasons I went into family medicine is because I didn’t want to lose my patients when they turn 18,” she said. “I’ve been able to take care of multiple generations, through all the stages they go through and all the ups and downs their lives have, and that’s been really rewarding.”

Among the topics she’d like to address with patients is the importance of preventive care, particularly with those experiencing diabetes or those who are on the verge of it.

“It’s something that’s very prevalent here, and my colleagues are very knowledgeable about it,” “We’ll be working on some things like group visits and things like that that I think will be very beneficial to the community.”

When she’s not in the office, Becker enjoys ranching, snowmobiling and spending time with her husband Tim, sons Ryan and Ben and their two chocolate Labradors.
