DOW won’t increase licenses for big game

Plan would have benefited private landowners

The Colorado Division of Wildlife won’t pursue a plan this year to provide more big game licenses to private landowners in limited hunting areas.

DOW director Bruce McCloskey made the announcement Saturday. During discussions with landowners and sportsmen, the DOW had discussed increasing licenses for private landowners from 15 percent to 30 percent. The increase would have required a change in state legislation.

“After listening to comments from both sides, our director decided to put this on hold,” DOW spokesman Todd Malmsbury said.

But the DOW may move forward with the proposal next year, and it may broaden the discussions to include other license changes, Malmsbury said.

Future license change discussions will include all interested parties from the start, he said.

The DOW came under fire from sportsmen during the past few weeks for discussing the license proposal with landowners before discussing it with sportsmen.

Landowners argued that they deserved more licenses, because their land management practices help maintain healthy big game herds.

But sportsmen opposed to the proposal said it was unfair to hunters. It would make it more difficult to obtain a license in areas where it already is difficult to get licenses, some sportsmen argued.
