Costume cabaret is fund-raiser for Boys and Girls Club

Those wondering what Mayor Dave DeRose would look like in a zoot suit will have a chance to find out Saturday at the “Roaring Twenties Costume Cabaret.”

The event begins at 7 p.m. at the Holiday Inn and is a fund-raiser for the Boys and Girls Club of Craig.

“It’s going to be a fun night and a chance to learn about Boys and Girls Club,” committee chairwoman Patti Askew said.

The evening will include hors d’oeuvres, drinks and dancing. Prizes will be awarded for the best-dressed couple and most outstanding male and female outfits. The Volunteer of the Year and Person of the Year also will be announced.

Sen. Jack Taylor and his wife, Geneva, are expected to attend the event, as are many other community leaders.

The Boys and Girls Club of Craig opened June 14 at East Elementary School and has grown from 70 members to 250. The club began operating at the Boys and Girls Club building this week.

The club is open from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Members may arrive and leave any time during those hours.

Children have the Learning Center available to them, where they are encouraged to complete their homework before participating in a variety of activities in the game room, gym, computer lab or cultural center.

“It’s great for the community to have a place for kids to go and not be home alone,” Boys and Girls Club President Pres Askew said.
