Dinosaur man released from hospital after assault

A Dinosaur man suffered injuries in a fight Wednesday in the parking lot of the Loaf-n-Jug in Dinosaur, the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Kevin Walling was taken by ambulance to the Rangely District Hospital after a cashier at the convenience store called police reporting that a man was unconscious. He was punched, knocked down and kicked in the face, said Jeremy Ashton, an investigator with the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office.

Walling was later flown to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction for lacerations to his head and neck, Ashton said. He was released from the hospital Thursday.

Jeremi Jack Bird, 29, also of Dinosaur, was arrested in connection with the incident.

Ashton said the men had gotten into a fight, but it’s unclear what prompted the altercation. It was reported at about 1 p.m.

Bird was charged with second-degree assault and possession of a dangerous weapon.

Bird was carrying two knives, Ashton said, but the man did not wield the weapons. Bird faces the felony charge for possession of the knives because he is a convicted felon and not allowed to carry weapons, Ashton said.

A deputy from Rangely secured the scene, as Dinosaur currently has no local police force. A Moffat County deputy later appeared on the scene and arrested Bird.
