Deadline for municipal election filings fast approaching
CRAIG — Municipal elections are coming up April 2, and with the Jan. 21 deadline to file quickly approaching, only two candidates so far have emerged.
Council members with terms expiring include:
• Mayor John Ponikvar, who serves on the Colorado Municipal League, Downtown Business Association, Yampa River System Legacy Project, and Yampa Valley Regional Airport Commission. Ponikvar has filed for re-election.
• Council member Joe Bird, who serves as a Chamber of Commerce liaison, Human Resources Council, and Planning and Zoning Commission.
• Mayor Pro Tem Derek Duran, who serves as liaison to the Colorado Northwestern Community College and Craig/Moffat Economic Development Partnership. Duran has filed for re-election.
• Council member Jarrod Ogden, who serves on the Moffat County Airport Board and Parks and Recreation Board.
In addition to Duran, Paul James and Eric Simo have both pulled petitions to seek election to city council, according to Craig City Clerk Liz White. As of Thursday, only Ponikvar had pulled a petition to run for mayor.
Any city resident wishing to run for a seat may pick up nominating petitions in the City Clerk’s office. Completed petitions must be returned by Jan. 21 for a candidate’s name to appear on the ballot.
For more information about running for city council, contact White at firstname.lastname@example.org or 970-826-2008.
New school record, outdone expectations at state mark bright future for Moffat County track and field
With Saturday bringing with it a new team record, a competition that nearly didn’t happen, and a bet with some slippery stakes, never let it be said that Moffat County High School track and field athletes don’t make their season exciting right up until the very end.
