Davida White: Flag disrespected at Relay for Life ceremony

Dear Editor,

During the opening ceremony of the Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society, all participants were gathered on the infield of the track at the Moffat County High School. Hats were removed and hands were placed over hearts as the color guard presented the symbol of freedom, Old Glory.

Then an announcement instructed us all to do an about face, which we did. For myself, I was expecting to see a flag being raised from the flagpole at the southern end of the field, but there was no flag.

There was nothing for many seconds, then three extremely loud explosions. Could this not have been done after paying respect to the American flag? Was turning our backs on the flag the decision made by all 11 members of the 2007 Relay for Life Committee?

Maybe next year, respect, loyalty and dignity will come before fireworks.
