Dana Forbes : enalized for success

To the Editor:

On Thursday night, we were denied the opportunity to expand the Dinosaur Charter School to junior high. Why? The first objection raised against us was that our enrollment for next year was “unrealistically high.” The truth is, we are going to double and probably triple last year’s enrollment based on solid registrations that have been given to us.

Then the complaint was “but a good chunk of these come from Utah.” So what? Colorado has agreements with neighboring states for mutual enrollment. We are a regional school and proud of it. If parents are willing to drive an 80-mile round trip twice a day for their children, I commend them.

Then the complaint was, “You’d be too far extended to go to junior high. Prove you can provide a quality education first for K-6.” Show me one other school in the state that can match our student/teacher ratio and the qualifications of our staff. I know of none. Don’t the parents who were literally in tears begging the board to allow junior high because of how their children are doing here speak to quality? Yes, our CSAP scores will be low this year. Most of the students testing came to Dinosaur well into the year, some only weeks before the test, from situations in which they were failing. All the students will show extreme improvement next year. That is, they would, but because 80 percent were going into the seventh grade, I guess we’ll never know.

We have the money, the facilities and the enrollment. Allowing junior high costs the district nothing. Please don’t penalize us for being successful!

Sincerely,

Dana Forbes
