D.A.R.E. plans fund-raising magic show

Ryan Sheridan

The Craig Police Department is sponsoring a magic show in September to raise funds for the local D.A.R.E. programs. Tickets for children and senior citizens will be sold over the telephone, allowing residents and local businesses to purchase them ahead of time.

The “Magic! Magic! Magic! Show” will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 27 at Moffat County High School. The program has been brought to Craig for four years as a fund-raiser. The show has been more of a musical/variety show in the past but will now focus more on magic.

“We change the show every year, we change it all the time,” said Nora Langdon, of Midwest Entertainment. “We’ll have different magicians and change things up while keeping certain things like the levitation shows and the sawing in half, which is more of a comedy act.”

Langdon is assisting Student Resource Officer Carolyn Wade in organizing the fund-raiser.

When the pledge for tickets is taken, the business or resident who has sponsored the ticket will have their name printed on the tickets. As soon as pledges are taken, the tickets are shipped to the donor, allowing them to distribute the tickets themselves or send them back for the show organizers to distribute, Langdon said.

The tickets for children and seniors will cost $6 while adult tickets, which will only be sold the day of the show, will cost $8.

Businesses will also be able to arrange for posters for the show to be displayed at their location, and will be able to serve as distribution points for the $1-off coupon for adult tickets that will be made available as the show date approaches. Those coupons will also be made available at the Craig Daily Press.

The fund-raiser has become more and more popular every year it has been held, and last year raised $1,200 for the D.A.R.E program, Wade said.

“This will be our fourth year, and we hope to raise even more money for D.A.R.E.,” she said. “The money is used to by books, erasers, pencils, pens, hacky-sacs, rulers, folder, T-shirts, water bottles everything we use and hand out at the classes.

“We are greatly appreciative of the business and individuals that support our program’s fund-raiser.”

The D.A.R.E. program is a cooperative effort between the schools and the police department to help educate children about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse and violence, and to promote social skills and self-esteem. Wade has been a D.A.R.E. officer for four years. She said the program creates “a very positive interaction between officers and students.

“The kids love the classes,” Wade said. “What they tell us about the course is that it dispels some of the myths and addresses concerns about dealing with drugs and violence and social issues they’ll face as they grow up.”

Telephone calls for ticket sponsorship began this week, Langdon said.
