Crash sends 1 to hospital

A car accident at Colowyo Mine south of Craig sent one mineworker to the hospital late Saturday.

Jason Mack, 22, was driving a Colowyo pickup when it collided with a coal truck just before midnight Saturday, said Colorado State Patrol Capt. Brett Williams.

The driver of the coal truck was not injured, but Mack was trapped inside the pickup, and emergency crews worked to remove him, said Craig Fire/Rescue Chief Chris Nichols.

Colowyo, 5731 Colorado High–way 13, has its own ambulance crew, but crews from Craig Fire/Rescue were called to the accident.

Mack had to be extracted from the vehicle, and Colowyo crews don’t have the equipment to do so, said Dallas Scholes, a spokesman for Kennecott Energy, the company that owns Colowyo.

The accident occurred on mine property, but because of the extent of injuries, Colorado State Patrol responded, Williams said.

State Patrol and Colowyo are investigating the cause of the accident, Scholes said.

It isn’t clear whether the accident was a head-on collision, or whether Mack’s truck ran into the side of the coal transport truck’s trailer, Scholes said.

Mack was taken by ambulance to The Memorial Hospital in Craig, Nichols said.

Mack was later transferred to Yampa Valley Medical Center in Steamboat Springs, where he was in fair condition Monday.
