Craig’s museum fundraiser under way

As part of its yearly fundraiser, the Museum of Northwest Colorado is seeking donors to sponsor the facility.

Dan Davidson, museum director, said he hopes to raise $12,000 this year.

The money will be used to keep the museum open six days a week, Davidson said.

The museum asks people to sponsor a day at the museum for $40, a week for $250 and a month for $1,000.

Last year, the museum raised about $3,500 from sponsorships, Davidson said.

This year, sponsorships have raised $4,500 through 37 donors.

The money will help the museum, which is funded by Moffat County, to continue to offer free admission to the public, Davidson said.

“It will help the museum run at a much more public level,” Davidson said.

Sponsors will be honored with a plaque, which will be placed near the museum’s entrance.

The museum began the fundraiser a few years ago after county government hit some hard financial times and funding was cut, Davidson said.

Sponsorships allowed the museum to open on the weekends, Davidson said.

Along with keeping the facility open, Davidson said the money would help fund some of the museum’s temporary exhibits.

Last spring, the museum exhibited local photographs from the 1970s, when Craig nearly doubled in size in just a few years.

The museum has an exhibit this winter honoring local soldiers who fought in foreign wars.

Individuals often sponsor a week in the name of a loved one, Davidson said.

The family of former Colorado governor and Craig resident Edwin Johnson has been a sponsor before, Davidson said. The museum has an exhibit commemorating Johnson.

The Craig McDonald’s restaurant sponsored a week last year.

McDonald’s owner Chris Nichols said he contributed to the museum after Davidson helped the restaurant with some pictures to decorate its dining room.

The museum is an important part of the community, Nichols said.
