Craig work-release escapee found in Baggs

A Craig man who escaped from a Moffat County work-release program earlier this month is in the custody of the Carbon County Jail in Rawlins, Wyo.

Paul Mendoza, 39, was arrested after a person called to report that he had been seen in Baggs, Wyo., said Sgt. Ken Uecker of the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office.

“I don’t have any idea who he was staying with,” Uecker said. “Evidently, someone knew who he was.”

Uecker said that Mendoza, who failed to return to the jail Sept. 8 on his second day of work release, will be transferred to the Moffat County Jail. Mendoza may face additional escape and drug charges. A drug test, which Mendoza took a day before he failed to return to jail, came back positive for drugs, Uecker said.

Mendoza was sentenced to the work-release program in lieu of jail time. He was charged with driving with a revoked license and driving without proof of insurance.

Jail officials gave Mendoza two days to find employment. Otherwise, he would have to serve his entire six-month sentence in jail. He failed to return to jail on the second night of his sentence, jail officials said.

Work-release inmates have to report to the jail each night.

Uecker said Mendoza was the first work-release inmate to fail to report back to the jail.
