Craig ‘welcome’ signs to be installed

Visitors to Craig will be greeted from each direction by an elaborate “Welcome to Craig” sign this summer.

A plan to erect the signs that has been in place since the early ’90s will definitely come into fruition once the cold breaks, city Parks and Recreation Department Director Dave Pike reported during Tuesday’s Craig City Council

meeting.

Plans for the signs are in the 1993 Civic Improvement Plan, but didn’t actually become a reality until 1999 when the Craig Civic Improvement Authority held a contest for a sign design.

In 2001, $20,000 was set aside to purchase one sign, but it was determined that could pay for all four signs.

Discussions about the design, placement and construction continued for several years until a bid for the creation of the signs was awarded to Angel Signs in Grand Junction in mid 2002.

The city council decided at that time to bid the construction of the signs separate from the construction of a river-rock base for the

signs.

“We couldn’t find anyone who would do those rocks at that time,” Pike said. “We’ve got to coordinate the two of them and we just haven’t had a lot of luck with that.”

Angel Signs has received a check for 50 percent of the price of the signs and plans to have them completed by the end of the winter. By then, city officials hope to have a contractor hired.

The signs will be “Bulldog” blue. One will have a picture of an elk, another will depict a golfer, the third a snowmobiler and the fourth the Craig Station Power Plant.

The money also will purchase a new sign for The Center of Craig.
