Craig Sports Briefs for Nov. 17, 2014: Girls on the Run sees large turnout

The 2014 Girls on the Run program for young female runners had a great deal of participation from local athletes.

Joining in with 5K races in early November in Steamboat Springs and Telluride, 93 girls from five Craig schools were able to join in the activity for grades three through eight, which involved training for 10 weeks.

Girls on the Run of Western Colorado was also helped along this year by a $15,000 grant from the Daniels Fund to continue the work of building confidence and physical ability in girls, as well as their families.

Melanie Steele, GOTR’s director of marketing, outreach and races, said a story that touched her heart was seeing a 91-year-old woman participate in a GOTR 5K with her daughter, granddaughter and great-granddaughter.

“How cool is that?” she said. “What a fun experience for these women to have.”

Additionally, another story involved a young runner with physical limitations who, when questioned about why she wanted to be in a 5K, responded, “Because I can!”

“That’s the GOTR spirit,” Steele said.
