Craig Sports Briefs for July 1, 2015: Fourth of July shooting event offered Saturday

Bears Ears Sportsman Club and Bears Ears Tea Party Patriots will host the Freedom Fun Shoot from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Bears Ears range on Moffat County Road 7 north of Craig.

The event includes multiple gun activities, including usage of the .22 rifle and long range rifle, the pistol bowling pin shoot and kid’s shoot.

All ages and experience levels are welcome. Shooters are expected to bring their own firearms, ammunition and protective equipment. Tickets are $2 per person per game.



Prizes are available for winners and concessions will be on sale throughout the afternoon.

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Wounded Warrior Project.

British Soccer Camp starts Monday

Challenger Sports British Soccer Camp takes place July 6 to 10 at Woodbury Sports Complex. Programs include First Kicks, Mini Soccer, Half Day and the extra seminar Golden Goal Camp, an add-on to those who sign up for Half Day.

Program — Age(s), time, cost

First Kicks — 3, 11 a.m. to noon, $86

Mini Soccer — 4 to 5, 10:30 a.m. to noon, $102

Half Day — 6 to 16, 9 a.m. to noon, $129

Golden Goal Camp — 8 to 16, 1 to 3 p.m., $48

Challenger is available to youth athletes of all ages looking to improve their skills from a program that works with kids across the United States and Canada.

Regular registration has passed, but parents can register the day of the event with a $10 late fee.

Silver Bullet women’s golf tournament approaching

The 29th annual Silver Bullet Ladies Golf Classic — described by organizers as “the ultimate girls weekend” — takes place July 18 and 19 at Yampa Valley Golf Course as an individual stroke play format with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. both days. Handicap information is required to register.

A single entry is $120, and discounts are offered for those returning who bring in new players, the deadline to register July 11.

Practice rounds will be available July 17, and for those coming from out of town, special room rates have been arranged at Clarion Inn & Suites, Hampton Inn & Suites and Deer Park Inn & Suites.

Summer Cheer Camp begins July 20

Registration is open for Summer Cheer Camp, a program for girls in first- through sixth-grade to learn more about the sport of cheerleading.

Sessions will be available twice weekly starting July 20 as participants learn hip-hop choreography routines and cheering chants, which they will employ during the Doak Walker football games and the Moffat County High School Homecoming halftime show in the fall.

Cheerleaders will also learn responsibility, make friends and, most importantly, have fun.

The cost is $60, and the deadline to register at Craig Parks & Recreation, 300 W. Fourth St., is July 15. Late entries may be accepted but will include a $10 fee.

Doak Walker football registration open

Craig Parks & Recreation’s Doak Walker tackle football program is seeking players, coaches and officials. Registration is open for boys and girls entering third- through sixth-grade to play this fall.

The program stresses equal participation skill development and fun with practices and games three times weekly throughout the season, which will run from late August through October.

The cost is $60 to play, and the deadline to sign up is July 15. Weigh-ins and equipment checkouts will take place July 22. A coaches meeting will be offered Aug. 5, and a clinic for players and coaches will take place Aug. 17.

Volleyball camps offered for Moffat County, Craig athletes

The Moffat County High School and Craig Middle School volleyball programs will host camps for players July 29 to 31. Current and incoming high school players will attend MCHS, 900 Finley Lane, and CMS will be in the gym of Sandrock Elementary School, 201 E. Ninth St.

Overseeing the program will be Chris Wells, head coach for the Chadron State College volleyball team. Girls from outside Moffat County are also invited to attend.

The cost to register is $105. Registration forms are available at the front desk of the Craig Daily Press, 466 Yampa Ave.

Parks & Recreation providing volleyball camp for middle school players

Craig Parks & Recreation will host a volleyball camp for sixth- through eighth- graders Aug. 10 to 13 at Craig Middle School, 915 Yampa Ave. Becky Howlett will instruct players in beginning and intermediate skills.

Registration is $30 and includes a t-shirt. Participants must bring athletic shoes, knee pads, a water bottle and a tennis ball.

The deadline to sign up is July 29.
