Craig Sports Briefs for Feb. 1, 2014: Boys and girls weekend basketball postponed

Moffat County’s basketball games for Friday and Saturday have been postponed due to concerns over road conditions.

Olathe was set to visit Craig for four junior varsity and varsity games beginning at 3 p.m. Friday, but chose not to travel with recent weather making the lengthy trip a bigger safety risk. The games will now happen at MCHS on Monday, with the same start times. Girls JV will be first at 3 p.m., with boys JV (4:30), girls varsity (6) and boys varsity (7:30) to follow.

The Bulldogs’ Saturday games at Gunnison have also been postponed due to more snow predicted on the Western Slope Friday night. There is no make-up date set for the Gunnison games yet, said Rick Schmitz, Moffat County School District co-curricular athletic director. That will be determined at the start of next week.

Snake River basketball teams have strong January

Since coming back from winter break, the Little Snake River girls basketball team has been on fire, winning five of six games and improving to 10-3 this season.

The team’s lone loss in January came in a 50-47 defeat in a hard-fought game at Saratoga. Aside from that, the Rattlers have been rolling, picking up wins over Rangely, Manila, Big Piney, Cokeville and Farson-Eden. The two most recent wins have put Snake River in first place in the Wyoming 1A Southwest Region standings at 2-0.

The boys team has had a tougher road, but has produced better results lately. After a 4-4 start, the Rattlers are 8-5 and also undefeated in the Southwest Region. They have an important game at Encampment (3-0 in the Southwest) coming Saturday, giving them a chance to take sole possession of first place in the region.
