Postal customers in Craig were generous in giving to the annual letter carriers and postal food drive May 9. Craig residents donated 3,580 pounds of food.

That food, the Postal Service reported in a news release, will provide an estimated 2,754 meals to support the needy and the hungry.

All the food collected will go to local community food banks, which support area organizations and programs serving the hungry throughout the year.

“Our Craig community and postal customers really delivered to help stamp out hunger,” postmaster Victor Cordes said. “With the poor economy, many more people and families are hurting. This food will go to those in our communities who most need it.

“We thank our postal customers for their giving, and we thank all of our letter carriers and volunteers who worked so hard to make the food drive a huge success once again. Thanks to you, many people in our community and area will not go hungry.”

The Postal Service also thanked KRAI, MJK Sales & Feed for the use of scales to weigh food collected, Girl Scouts Troop 213 and the 4-H group, Colts & Fillies, for volunteering to collect food at local area grocery stores.

This year marked the 17th year of the one-day National Association of Letter Carriers “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive Across America. Craig was one of more than 10,000 communities nationwide participating this year.

It is estimated the food drive collected more than 70 million pounds to support the hungry.
