Craig resident’s death at Sandrocks ruled accidental

David Burns

Last month’s death of Craig resident David Burns has been ruled accidental.

Moffat County Coroner Kirk McKey said Friday that Burns, whose body was found May 12 at the base of the Sandrocks in north Craig, died from blunt force trauma impact consistent with a fall from a height comparable to that of the rock formation.

He also said nothing in the autopsy results suggested foul play or suicide.

“Everything else (from the autopsy) was clean,” McKey said. “It’s just a tragic, tragic loss.”

Burns was 53.

Craig Police Commander Bill Leonard said he met Thursday with McKey and deputy coroner Beka Warren, who handled the investigation for the coroner’s office, to review the case and determine a cause of death.

He said the ruling of an accidental death was a result both a police investigation into the death as well as autopsy results.

“(The ruling) was based on the totality of the investigation,” he said. “Everything that was involved, evidence and statements and whatnot from different people.”

Leonard also said while some city officials commented following Burns’ death on the need for safety measures at the Sandrocks to help prevent another fatality — Burns was the fifth in five years — such measures wouldn’t have helped in this situation.

“I think it’s a question of people just needing to watch what they do up there,” he said. “I don’t believe there’s anything that in this particular case that would have changed the outcome, unfortunately.”
