Craig resident killed in rollover
October 28, 1999
Craig resident Ryan Empson, 20, was killed Thursday when he was thrown from his pick-up truck as he was driving up Rio Blanco Hill, south of Craig.
Empson was 35 miles from Craig and heading south on Colorado Highway 13 when he veered off the the right side of the road. His wheels caught in the soft shoulder. Empson was hauling a trailer that also ran off the road and down an embankment.
According to Colorado State Patrol Sgt. Hank Chase, Empson over-corrected to the left causing his vehicle to roll 1 3/4 times, landing on its left side.
Empson was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Colorado State Patrol officers.
Chase said the results of the accident may have been different had Empson been wearing a seat belt.
“It’s always better to stay in the vehicle,” Chase said.
