Craig resident gives up on building trailer park

Craig resident Harvey Craft wanted to ease an expected housing shortage this fall by opening a trailer park on his Thompson Hill property.

Craft planned to build four recreational vehicle lots to rent to pipeline workers. The construction of two natural-gas pipelines through Moffat County is expected to bring as many as 800 workers to the area this fall and winter.

Craft gave up on the idea after the Moffat County Planning and Zoning Commission on Tuesday recommended the county commissioners deny his request for a permit.

Also, his neighbors made it clear they didn’t want a trailer park in their neighborhood.

“I don’t think I want to fight with my neighbors about this,” Craft said.

Craft’s property did not meet county regulations for a trailer park, the zoning commission said.

After the commission voted against Craft’s request for a conditional use permit, Craft said he planned to continue fighting, but by Wednesday afternoon he had reconsidered.

Some Thompson Hill residents on Tuesday said they didn’t want the additional traffic that would come with the trailer park.

Traffic issue

“I moved up there for country living,” Craft’s neighbor Kelly Walls said. “It is mainly a huge traffic issue for me.”

Daniel Garrett, who lives on Craft’s block, said temporary residents wouldn’t have the same attachment to the neighborhood as permanent residents.

“They don’t own that place, and they don’t care about it,” Garrett said.

If his neighbors were willing to write letters and attend the planning meeting to stop him, the trailer park might not be a good addition to the neighborhood, Craft said.

“Maybe they’re right,” he said.

Craft’s neighbors said they were glad to hear he had given up on the trailer park plan.

“That was a very good choice on his part,” Kerri Mirante said.

Working together to fight Craft’s trailer park has brought the neighborhood closer together, she said.

“The truth is, we really have great neighbors,” Mirante said.
