Craig police warn residents about recent thefts

Purses and wallets top items reportedly stolen from unlocked vehicles

Locking up vehicles and keeping valuables out of sight may help deter what Craig Police are citing as a recent rash of reported stolen items.

Police have fielded as many as three calls a day during the past two weeks of residents reporting stolen items, Craig police Sgt. Bill Leonard said.

“A lot of these (thefts) occurred in unlocked cars,” he said. “Don’t leave anything valuable unattended for a long period of time, or keep it out of sight. It only takes a split second to snatch purse out of car.”

Stolen wallets and purses top the list of stolen goods, police said. In some instances, people have tried to use the stolen checks and credit cards, Leonard said.

It’s unclear whether the thefts are related; stolen items have been reported across town during all parts of the day, he said.

“Who knows on something like this,” Leonard said. “A lot of these are crimes of opportunity. They may not have thought about stealing it until they saw it sitting there.”

The numbers of crimes of opportunity have increased, he said.

Leonard said residents re—-porting stolen purses and wallets generally are not losing money because they tend to quickly notify their respective financial institutions.
