Craig police warn of scam

Craig Daily Press Staff Report

Craig Police Department is warning residents of a scam that attempts to convince victims they have won a prize in order to take their money.

The scammers are posing as representatives from Publishing Clearing House, a direct marketing company that markets merchandise and magazine subscriptions with sweepstakes and prizes, and asking targets to send money via Western Union.

According to a news release from Craig police, “In looking into this further it is apparent that this is similar to a pyramid scheme where numerous unsuspecting victims are being told to pick up money the send it to other people who are sharing in the winnings.”

Investigator John Forgay said one individual in Craig has already fallen victim to the scam and he recommends any one who receives suspicious offers notify law enforcement.

“They should question it and it’s no problem calling and checking on it,” Forgay said.
