Craig Police Department hires two new officers

Ryan Sheridan

The Craig Police Department has hired two Craig residents to join the force less than two months after announcing the initiative of local recruitment.

In February, the Craig Police Department offered salaries and school costs to qualified candidates to attend Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification classes. In exchange, the new officer would sign a three-year contract with the department.

This month, two residents were hired under that arrangement, bringing the department up to full strength. Mike Edwards, 31, and Dale Secules, 41, will be leaving for Delta on May 1 to begin the POST process. They will return August 15, and function as trainees in the field for several weeks before becoming officers.

“After they successfully complete the POST training and pass state certification, they’ll be placed with a field training officer for 12 to 14 weeks,” Craig Police Administrative Sgt. Bill Leonard said. “We had hoped (our local recruitment) would turn out positively and it did. We are very comfortable with the two gentleman, their interest in law enforcement and their interest in remaining in the community.”
