Craig pie makers to celebrate sweet, savory slices on National Pie Day, Tuesday, Jan. 23

CRAIG — People across the county will celebrate an American icon Tuesday during National Pie Day, held every year on Jan. 23.

In “Pie: a Global History,” author Janet Clarkson wrote, "America has developed a pie tradition unequivocally and unapologetically at the sweet end of the scale …"

Pie day is to Colorado what apple pie is to America.

"A nuclear engineer, brewer and teacher named Charlie Papazian, from Boulder, can be credited for this yummy food holiday. He declared his birthday, Jan. 23, as National Pie Day to celebrate the dessert he loved so much," according to offers.com, a website that is celebrating by posting deals on pies.

The trend caught on, and the American Pie Council began sponsoring the holiday in 1986.

National Pie Day should not be confused with Pi Day — a celebration of the mathematical constant that helps determine the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which falls on March 14.

"We'll have individual pies for pie day," said KS Kreations Owner Kandee Dilldine.

The local bakery has made a wide assortment of pies through the years. One of their more usual requests was a sour cream and raisin pie.

"We are up to doing any kind of pie. We usually make pies on special occasions. Call and order," Dilldine said.

The pie baker is Kassie Vesely, who won the award for best apple pie at a pie baking and eating contest in downtown Craig during the summer.

The made-from-scratch crusts and fillings are crafted with love, Vesely said.

KS Kreations also plans to hold a Facebook survey asking people to nominate their favorite type of pie.

Another Craig eatery known for pies is Village Inn, which offers fruit pies, cream pies, cheesecake and carrot cake. The fruit pies are made in-house, and the cream pies are prepared in the kitchen.

Every Wednesday — pie day — they offer a free slice of pie with the order of a meal.

"On average, we sell around 300 slices of pie. Thanksgiving, we sold about 320 whole pies and on Christmas, another 300," said General Manager Wayne VanMeter.

The business plans to have the pie case stocked and backup pies on hand for Tuesday’s salute to all things pie.

On National Pie Day, the restaurant will celebrate by offering $2 off any whole pie, said assistant general manager Cloe Baxter.

VanMeter recommends this month's featured pie — White Chocolate Cherry Dream.

"It's my favorite pie. It makes it hard to stay away from the pie case," he said. "It is first-come, first-served, so a phone call to reserve your favorite is advised."
