Craig Middle School basketball hosts Steamboat in 4 games Friday
Craig — The Craig Middle School and Steamboat Springs Middle School boys basketball teams squared off in four matchups Friday in Craig.
Craig and Steamboat seventh- and eighth-grade A and B teams battled at the CMS gym and the Sandrock Elementary School gym. Steamboat dominated both A games, but Craig’s B teams had the Sailors’ number for a 2-2 split.
In the eighth-grade A game, Craig could not hang with Steamboat on the glass. The Sailors’ front court pulled down offensive rebounds throughout the game, drawing fouls and scoring on putbacks.
Those rebounds also kept CMS from getting out in transition, a staple of its fast-paced style. Steamboat built a 12-4 lead after a quarter and never looked back, earning a 38-20 win against the Bulldogs.
The seventh-grade A game was closer than the first time the two teams met in Steamboat on Oct. 19, but the game was another loss for the Bulldogs. Craig likes to press throughout the game, but the Sailors’ press-break once again was poised and delivered a 37-25 win.
In both B games, much of what wasn’t working for the Craig A teams was working for their B team counterparts. The seventh-graders played suffocating defense and consistently turned the Sailors over, holding a 9-2 lead at halftime.
In the eighth-grade game, Craig’s jump-shooting was a major factor as guards Tristen Walls, Adain Wilmot and Chase Marshall all found the basket off good ball movement. The Bulldogs held a 16-8 lead entering the fourth quarter of that game.
