Craig man faces three felonies

30-year-old charged in connection with alleged child sex assault

Joshua Roberts

— The 14th Judicial District Attorney’s Office has charged a 30-year-old Craig man with three felony charges in connection with an alleged assault of an 11-year-old girl.

The charges, filed Wednesday afternoon in Moffat County District Court, are sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust, a class 3 felony, criminal attempt to commit sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust and enticement of a child, both class 4 felonies.

The suspect, who is a relative of the alleged victim, was arrested Oct. 19 at his Craig home. He posted $40,000 bond Monday afternoon.

The Craig Police Department investigated the suspect after a family member reported the alleged incident, Police Chief Walt Vanatta said.

The charging document indicates that between May 15 and Sept. 15 the suspect subjected the child to sexual contact, prompting the sexual assault charge.

On or about Oct. 2, the suspect engaged “in conduct constituting a substantial step toward sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust,” according to the complaint.

It also states he “feloniously invited or persuaded or attempted to invite or persuade a child under the age of 15 years to enter any vehicle, building, room or secluded place with the intent to commit sexual assault or unlawful sexual contact upon the child.”

The newspaper is withholding the suspect’s name in accordance with newspaper policy regarding alleged sexual related offenses.

The charging document lists a potential witness list of Craig Police Department officers, a district attorney’s office investigator and two unnamed Craig residents.

Hearing continued

A Tuesday appearance for Terry Hankins, a 70-year-old gold miner who is accused of murdering his wife, Cynthia Hankins, of Craig, was continued.

Hankins, who is being held without bond in Moffat County Jail, is scheduled to appear next for a status conference at 1 p.m. Dec. 4.

He faces nine charges including first-degree murder, three counts of theft and three counts of felony forgery.
