Craig firefighters’ luau fundraiser to take place Saturday

Craig Daily Press Staff Report

Dwayne Gonzales places a lei on Cameron Robinson during the Craig Fire/Rescue Firefighters' Ball and Hawaiian Luau in 2009. This year's fundraising event takes place from 6 p.m. to midnight Saturday at The OP Bar and Grill, with proceeds going toward a scholarship fund for local students.

Craig Fire/Rescue will host the 75th annual Firefighters' Ball and Hawaiian Luau on Saturday night at the O.P. Bar and Grill, 534 E. Victory Way.

Starting at 6 p.m., the spirit of the tropics will overtake Northwest Colorado as the night kicks off, with everyone asked to wear their most aloha-worthy attire as part of a costume contest, be it a floral shirt and shorts or a grass skirt.

Fire Chief KC Hume himself will provide music throughout the night, which also includes food, drinks, a limbo contest and plenty of door prizes.

Hume said the longstanding tradition of the Firefighters’ Ball has evolved a bit from a formal event primarily benefiting the agency into one that in recent years has maintained a laid-back atmosphere while raising money for a separate cause, in this case a scholarship fund from Fire/Rescue for local students graduating high school.

"We invite the whole community to come out and mingle with the firefighters and support a good cause," Hume said.

Tickets are $10 apiece for the luau, which is restricted to ages 21 and older, and can be purchased from any Craig firefighter or at the fire station at 419 Yampa Ave.
