Craig Education Briefs for Aug. 23, 2014: 1st day of school for Moffat County School District is Monday
Students of Moffat County public schools will head back to school Monday at 7:55 a.m. for elementary students, 8:05 a.m. for middle school students and 7:55 a.m for high school students.
All four Moffat County elementary schools will host a Kindergarten Connection day Monday. Designed to ease young kids and parents into the school routine, the day will consist of a 90-minute orientation for kindergartners and their parents, followed by a half-day of kindergarten on Tuesday. Wednesday will be the first full day of kindergarten.
Moffat County Board of Education to convene Thursday
The Moffat County Board of Education will hold its first meeting of the school year at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Moffat County School District Administration Building at 775 Yampa Ave. All are welcome to attend.
Free or reduced meal program and school fees available to qualifying households
Households that qualify for free or reduced meals also may qualify for free or reduced book fees, class fees, sport and athletic fees and driver education fees. In order to be considered for free or reduced fees, an approved meal application form must be on file before Sept. 19. Qualification for free or reduced sports and athletic fees must be identified before participation in any sport, and fees will not be waived after the sport or athletic program has begun.
Households whose circumstances change during the school year may apply after Sept. 19. However, fees for programs will not be waived before the date of approval on the application form.
Tutoring available to high school students
Moffat County High School students in need of a little extra help in English, math and science are eligible to receive free tutoring at Colorado Northwestern Community College.
Sessions take place from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays for math and science and at the same time Tuesdays for English and essay-writing in CNCC’s Room 120.
Students must bring all the necessary assignments and materials.

Moffat County School District revamps website
Moffat County School District recently unveiled its newly designed website at http://www.moffatsd.org.
The site, which is still in continuing development, contains a great deal of visual flair, provides a hub for the sites of each individual school in MCSD and offers an improved forum for district announcements.
The district also recently released its annual newsletter with important information about the 2014-15 school year, which can be viewed on the site.
HAYDEN — In an effort to create jobs and spur the local economy, Hayden Town Council unanimously passed a financial incentive package for a new hemp business at its June 6 meeting.
