Craig church raises $6,000 for Community Kitchen
Craig — One local charitable group will be able to ensure its dishes are full of food for quite some time.
St. Michael’s Community Kitchen brought in $6,115 from its recent Empty Bowl fundraiser, money that will be used entirely to further the services of the church organization’s mission of feeding the hungry of Craig and Moffat County.
Empty Bowl, held Friday night at St. Michael Catholic Church, featured hundreds of pieces of pottery crafted by local artists which those in attendance bought and put to use for their meals during the evening. Several local eateries donated soup to fill the newly purchased pieces of art.
Roberta Hawks, one of the potters, said they sold out of bowls quickly.
“We had a wonderful time, a wonderful turnout,” she said. “A lot of people gave additional money for those bowls and were so generous.”
The majority of the funds came from the sale of the handmade dishes, but a silent auction also brought in some extra money. Community Kitchen Coordinator Robin Schiffbauer said much of the funds brought in will go toward the purchase of fresh fruits and vegetables.
The organization also receives numerous regular donations of food for its weekly outreach meals.
Every little bit helps when it comes to providing sustenance for the Community Kitchen’s regular crowd. The church opens its doors Tuesdays and Thursdays for anyone who wants to join in, with anyone welcome whether they have trouble putting food on their own tables or if they’d just like to be part of the fellowship.
In the coming months, the Community Kitchen will be offering special meals on Thanksgiving and the day after Christmas, but Craig can expect another Empty Bowl fundraiser next year, as well.
“We’ll definitely be doing it again next year,” Schiffbauer said.
