— In early May, Craig a cappella group Bella Vocé Show Chorus and quartet GirlZberry Jam competed in Sweet Adeline International’s Rocky Mountain Region 8 Regional Convention in Colorado Springs. Bella Vocé took home the title of best small chorus of the eight states attending: Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, South Dakota, Nebraska, Idaho, Montana and Kansas.

Director Jeana Womble said the members were in a state of shock upon hearing the announcement, quickly going into utter joy.

"We were, perhaps, hopeful for third place at best. I was going to be ecstatic if we got second," Womble said.

Womble was especially nervous since this was only her second year in her position.

"After two years, I think we were all a little anxious to see where we stood compared to everyone else," she said.

Bella Vocé consists of nine Craig singers, with six from the Denver area joining them upon arrival. Womble said the rehearsal the day before competition was the first time all 15 members were able to meet and sing together.

"Once they started singing, it all came together," she said. "These are the times I cherish. These are the bonding times, when we have pushed our vocal cords to the limit and we are starting to get a little goofy from the exhaustion, and when we finish late in the night about to drop but proud of what we have accomplished. I love that time together."

Upon receiving their placement, the women were able to sing in the Show of Champions, for which they had to prepare quickly.

The Region 8 website lists Colorado Springs ensemble Velvet Hills Chorus as the regional champions and Ruby Blue, of Denver, as the top quartet.

Although Bella Vocé's overall score was not high enough to qualify for an international competition in Las Vegas in 2016, it will have another chance at regionals next year.

Womble said the chorus also would like to give special thanks to many local agencies: Craig Middle School, for the weekly use of the stage where the singers rehearse; Chaos Ink, for providing new jerseys; Craig Storage, for a unit in which all their materials are stored; Loyd’s Cleaners, for helping with costumes; and City Market, for the City Market Cares program, which assists Bella Vocé financially.

Additionally, Bella Vocé recently awarded a scholarship of its own to Moffat County High School graduate Caitlin Harjes, who will study musical theater at the University of California-Irvine this fall.

Womble added that the search for new singers is an ongoing project, with anyone willing to work hard welcome among their ranks, whether they prefer big groups or solo work.

"In our sing-outs and concerts, every member has the opportunity to audition to sing a solo, if they so desire," she said. "We have had members perform solos in everything from opera to country to pop to jazz. We love it all."
