Moffat County High School’s homecoming week is scheduled for Oct. 15 through 19.

Pile burning approaches for area national forests

Fire crews from the Medicine Bow and Routt National Forests are making plans to begin burning slash piles in multiple locations as soon as weather conditions allow, according to a press release.

Slash pile burns will take place in Wyoming and Colorado, where it is estimated that even after multiple years of this type of work, there still are thousands of piles remaining on the two national forests. Forest users and the public should be aware that smoke from these burns will often be visible and is expected. Questions should be directed to the local ranger district office.

Throughout the past few years, the two forests have been able to complete many tree-removal projects, often along travel corridors and in recreation areas, reducing hazardous fuels generated from the bark beetle epidemic. Fuels remaining in these areas include mechanically and hand piled slash, which has been gathered into piles. The main objective of the pile burns is to reduce the remaining dead fuels.

Pile burning will continue all fall and winter as long as weather permits.

Routt National Forest officials also are assessing the feasibility of conducting two multi-acre prescribed burns this fall, one near the Indian Run State Wildlife Area in western Routt County south of Hayden and one near the Seedhouse Guard Station in North Routt County, 20 miles north of Steamboat Springs.

The Indian Run prescribed burn would take place in the Yampa Ranger District, and the Seedhouse prescribed burn would take place in the Hahn’s Peak-Bears Ears Ranger District.

Both burns will take place only when weather and fuel moisture conditions are suitable.

Bella Voce Chorus seeks new members

The Bella Voce Chorus members of Sweet Adelines International are searching for women singers in the Craig, Meeker, Steamboat and Baggs areas. The group wants to grow its chorus. Celebrating its 30th year, the Bella Voce Chorus, formerly the “Yampa Valley Chorus” was founded in Craig in 1983. Now led by the group’s new director, Jeana Womble, the women range from 11-year-olds to grandmothers and all are from diverse backgrounds. Women of all ages who enjoy singing are invited to attend the chorus’ weekly rehearsal at 7 p.m. Thursdays at the Craig Middle School auditorium.

The internationally renowned Bella Voce Chorus is one of the hundreds of Sweet Adelines International choruses that make up this worldwide organization of women who sing four-part a cappella harmony.

Musical knowledge is not necessary to join — every rehearsal is like a voice lesson. Any woman of average singing ability, with or without vocal training, will find a part that fits her voice range. For more information, contact Jeana Womble at 970-824-6472 or
