Endangered fish to be helped by release

Endangered fish in the Fryingpan River are being aided by water releases from Ruedi Reservoir near Basalt.

An Aug. 6, flooding from Seven Castles Creek clogged the Fryingpan River downstream, and anglers in the Gold Medal trout stream were forced to go elsewhere to fish.

On Aug. 10, the Upper Colorado River Endangered Fish Recovery Program asked the Bureau of Reclamation to release more endangered fish water from Ruedi Reservoir to increase flows in the Fryingpan River.

While the higher flows may temporarily be too high for good fishing, it is believed the flow will help flush the sediment damage from the river, and provide long-term benefits to trout.

Electric co-ops sponsor training programs

To address the growing concerns of retiring electric utility line workers, Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association is helping to fund training programs in the region.

A recent $50,000 donation to Trinidad Junior State College in southern Colorado helped fund start-up costs of its new line-technician training program, which begins Aug. 22.

Graduates can expect to have an earning potential in the range of $21 to $34 per hour with benefit packages.
