Craig briefs: Fire west of Meeker managed for resources

Firefighters are managing the five-acre, lightning-ignited Blair Mountain Fire 20 miles west of Meeker to reduce hazardous fuels and benefit ecosystem health, according to a news release.

About 25 firefighters are working to secure the west flank of the fire, while allowing it to continue burning to the east, where it will help open the dense stands of pinyon and juniper. This will increase forest diversity and benefit wildlife habitat.

The fire is located southeast of Blair Mountain on Bureau of Land Management-administered lands and visible from Colorado Highway 64. Smoke should continue to be visible through the next few days as the fire moves east.

This management approach allows fire to play its natural, beneficial role in the environment, while keeping firefighter and public safety the top priority.
