Craig brief: VNA to offer free asthma screenings in schools

The Northwest Colorado Pulmonary Health Program, an initiative of the Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association, will offer asthma screenings and education to students with pulmonary symptoms.

Qualified students with asthma and other chronic breathing problems can undergo free spirometry (breathing) screenings and learn strategies for taking medication and developing an asthma action plan.

VNA’s Pulmonary Health Educator, Victoria Barron, is working with school nurses in Moffat, Routt and Jackson counties to implement the program at the start of the school year.

In its second year, the Northwest Colorado Pulmonary Health Program is sponsored by the Cancer, Cardiovascular Disease and Pulmonary Disease Grants Program at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

With funding support from the state’s tobacco excise tax revenue, the CCPD Program was established by House Bill 05-1262. CDPHE administers the program, which seeks to build a cohesive, coordinated and comprehensive approach to reducing cancer, cardiovascular disease and pulmonary disease in Colorado.

More than 22 million people in the U.S. have asthma; an estimated 6.7 million of those are children. In Colorado alone, out of the 390,000 people who have asthma, more than 89,000 of them are children.
