County commissioners get update from superintendent

Dinosaur National Monument Superintendent Chas Cartwright updated the Moffat County commissioners for the final time Tuesday.

Cartwright, who has been at Dinosaur for more than three years, is leaving at the end of next week. He is taking over as superintendent of Shenandoah National Park in Virginia.

The next superintendent at Dinosaur has not been named.

Cartwright told the commissioners Tuesday that he thought the relationship between the park service and the county has improved in his time there.

Cartwright said he tried to update the commissioners about the monument a couple of times per year.

“It’s an important relationship,” Cartwright said after the meeting. “I think keeping the county commissioners updated is just good business.”

Cartwright discussed a variety of topics with the commissioners Tuesday, including drilling for oil on public lands, the drought, and off-road vehicles in national parks.

He also said the monument needs an employee who is an expert in livestock grazing to manage the livestock grazing in the monument.

“You can’t manage grazing unless you have someone who knows what they’re talking about,” Cartwright said.

Cartwright also said he would like to see more tourists visit the monument.

“We need tourism as much as we need oil and gas and we need agriculture,” Cartwright said.

County Commisioner Darryl Steele agreed. “Moffat County is very energy-dependent. It would be nice to diversify,” he said.
