Conditional use permit issued for 30-site camping facility on Yampa
It took the Moffat County Board of Commissioners less than 20 minutes to issue Don Steele and Darryl Steele a conditional use permit for a 30-site camping facility. The site will be on the brothers’ property along the Yampa River on the south side of the Maybell Bridge west of Craig.
This site will be next to the Colorado State Parks camp site that the Steele brothers opposed in a July Moffat County Planning and Zoning Board meeting.
During the July meeting the Steele brothers expressed concern over the trash and noise that would come from the State Parks seven-site camping facility that borders their property along the Yampa River.
The meeting took place after the commissioners issued a cease and desist order weeks before to stop State Parks construction. That order was ignored, with State Parks officials showing they had informed commissioners of the camp site construction earlier this year.
The Steele’s 30-site camping facility will be part of a new rodeo arena that will be managed under the name of New West Arena Cooperation.
Electricity, water and a dumping station will be provided at the camping facility.
Commissioners expressed little concern about the increase in access to the Yampa River the facility would bring an issue they were wary about when the State Parks smaller camp site facility was discussed in July.
“We’re going to charge a dollar lower than the State Parks and hopefully our camp site will be full,” said Don Steele. “We’re thinking about putting in a boat ramp, too.”
Commissioners and the Steele brothers laughed at the comment. It was a change of attitude from when the Steele brothers complained in July about the prospect of allowing camping close to their property.
After two days of competition at the Colorado State High School Rodeo Association State Finals, riders and ropers from Moffat and Routt counties are making their way into the home stretch.
