Community’s generosity provides presents for 360 area youth

Due to the generosity of local residents, more than 360 children received gifts this year that otherwise might not have through the annual “Christmas for Kids” program.

For 10 years local volunteers have worked to raise money and collect toys for under-privileged children in the community.

Last year 293 children received gifts, the year before, 325.

Georgina McAnally, chairperson of the local drive, said she felt fortunate at this year’s outpouring of donations.

“It’s been a hard year for everybody,” she said. “With the way the economy has been I feel very thankful about how it went.”

McAnally said about $4,900 was raised this year through the 93.7 KRAI media drive. The money from that drive was used to purchase gifts for local children.

A “giving tree” was also set up at Kmart, on which names and ages of children in the community were hung.

People could take a name off of the tree and buy a gift suitable for the age and sex of the child.

People could return the gift at any of several drop locations in Craig.

The toys were distributed to children and their families last weekend at 485 Yampa Ave. in Craig.

Corrie Scott, executive director of the Moffat County United Way, has said “Christmas for Kids” is a wonderful program.

“This is one of those programs that makes everybody feel good,” she said. “No one wants to see children go without toys.”

McAnally said there are going to be a lot of happy faces on Dec. 25.

“A lot of kids in Moffat County are going to have a good Christmas because of this community’s generosity,” she said.
