Community should support fire department with mill levy increase

To the Editor:
Where are you in your life? Are you at the end of your high school career wondering where to go next, or watching your grandchildren grow up?
Even if your place in life is somewhere in between, you are about to be affected by the decision made in the mill levy election on May 7. The money generated from the mill levy increase will help to support our local fire department. It will help provide the training necessary to pry you or your loved one from a terrible car accident. It will help pay for maintenance, and replace outdated equipment that may save your home. This money runs the very organization that may rescue your child from the river, save your business from burning down, provide assistance to the ambulance crew at your emergency; without cost to you. If this Mill Levy passes your property tax may increase approximately $30.00 a year. We pay more than that a month for car insurance. Do you see your insurance agent pulling you from a burning vehicle? I don’t want to pay any more taxes than I have to, but on the other side of the coin you get what you pay for. Without proper funding the Fire Department will have to quit providing some of the services that they currently do. Other organizations may feel that they could better benefit from taxpayers’ money. What good will these organizations provide for the community if the Fire Department is ill equipped to save them in an unfortunate event? I am not going to tell you how to vote; everyone is entitled to his or her own opinions. I just want you to ask yourself one question. Is your life worth $30?
