Committee seeks suggested names for Craig Intermediate School
Suggestion boxes for the renaming of Craig Intermediate School will be placed at the schools, the Moffat County School District administrative building, Craig City Hall, the Craig branch of the Moffat County Libraries, and the Moffat County Clerk and Recorder's office, beginning Tuesday.
Suggestions may be submitted as late as May 7. Students will vote on the top selections.
Craig Intermediate Elementary School. Bulldog Elementary. Creekside.
These are some of the suggestions Kamisha Siminoe, Craig Intermediate School principal, and other members of the school renaming committee, have heard in regard to a new name for Craig Intermediate.
Siminoe said she would like to hear the community’s suggestions.
“People have been giving us suggestions from historical names, locations, history and geographical features,” Siminoe said. “We’re really looking forward to seeing what people have come up with.”
Moffat County School Board member Karen Stillion, who is on the renaming committee, said having the community suggest names for the school is a way of giving back.
“The community passed the building project, so we want to let them name the new school,” Stillion said. “It’s our way of saying ‘thank you.'”
On Tuesday, suggestion boxes will be placed in the schools, the Moffat County Clerk and Recorder’s Office, the Moffat County School District administrative building, Craig City Hall, the Craig branch of the Moffat County Libraries, and several other locations.
The boxes with the suggestions will be picked up at 4 p.m. May 7.
A committee, made up of teachers, Siminoe, Stillion and other board members, parents and students will whittle down the suggestions. Students in preschool through sixth grade will vote on the top selections, and their recommendation will be given to the School Board for final consideration.
“When we get the boxes back on the seventh, we’ll sort through the different ideas,” Stillion said. “We might have five or six entries for the kids to vote on.”
Siminoe said there could be as many as eight choices on the final ballot for the students to select from.
“It was the perfect opportunity for input and to have this school be a legacy for the kids coming in and the kids leaving,” Siminoe said.
“It’s about the kids and letting them have a say.”
During the March 28 School Board meeting, the renaming committee will present their suggestion – the top vote-getter – for approval.
But, for now, only suggestions are needed.
“We want everybody’s ideas,” Stillion said. “I know a lot of the older residents in town know some history that they might be willing to share. They might want to write an explanation as to why the name would be a good fit.”
Craig Intermediate School, which will become an elementary school next year, now houses students in the fifth and sixth grade.
Siminoe, who will remain principal of the unnamed elementary school, is sad her current group of staff and students will be leaving in the fall.
The elementary school will house students in preschool through fifth grade, and teachers will be moved from one school to another.
“It will be difficult for me seeing the staff and students I loved and appreciated dispersed through the school system,” she said. “On the flip side, I’m ecstatic about all the great people who will be coming in.
“We’ll be able to create a new culture or community in the school. And it starts with the name.”
But stuffing the suggestion boxes won’t help to get a name selected, Siminoe said.
“Just because there are suggestions crammed in, it won’t make a difference,” she said. “They aren’t ballot boxes. It’s just the kids voting on the name.”
