Commissioner says one thing, actions show another

To the Editor:

In the Friday, Nov. 1 issues of the Craig Daily Press, T. Wright Dickinson was quoted as saying, “I don’t think you’ll find any communities more concerned with preserving people’s private property rights than we are.”

You didn’t take our private property rights into consideration when you declared a road through our personal, private property to be a county road. You kept insisting that it was a county road even though we brought a witness to prove that it was not a county road, even ignoring the facts that were presented to you that there are certain legal criteria to follow in order to declare a road a county road and this criterion was not followed.

But because somebody drew it on your county road map, you wouldn’t accept the words and proof that we brought before you. After the meeting, we asked the attorney who was present if Moffat County would have been sued if they had not made it a county road and were told that WE would have been sued and Moffat County would have been included in the suit.

It was especially disheartening to see that T. Wright’s and Les Hampton’s decision to declare this a county road was ready typed and prepared before the meeting was even adjourned, which shows us that any statements presented at the meeting were ignored and not even considered.

You should be more careful of your choice of words when you speak. You definitely were not concerned with preserving our private property rights.

Jim and Kathy Bassett,

Greystone
